Soft Drinks & Tonic Water

These are carbonated soft drinks that deliver fruity flavours — lemon, orange, lime, berry, and others — without the sugar of their full-strength counterparts. Instead, they use intense sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, or stevia to achieve sweetness with minimal or zero kilojoules.

Diet and zero-sugar soft drinks have become a major segment of the Australian beverage market, driven by consumer demand for lower-sugar options. Most major brands now offer sugar-free versions of their fruit-flavoured lines, and the flavour quality has improved significantly over the years as sweetener blending techniques have advanced.

These drinks are popular as everyday refreshments, mixers, and alternatives for people managing their sugar intake. The fruit flavours used are typically derived from natural essences or artificial flavourings, or a combination of both.

How it's made

These beverages are produced by blending purified water with fruit flavour essences — either natural extracts or synthetic flavourings — and dissolving in intense sweeteners to achieve the desired sweetness without sugar. Citric acid or phosphoric acid is added for tartness and balance. The mixture is then force-carbonated with carbon dioxide and filled into bottles or cans under pressure.
