Psyllium

Psyllium refers to the seed husks of Plantago ovata, a plant native to the Indian subcontinent. The husks are composed largely of a gel-forming soluble fibre called mucilage, which absorbs many times its weight in water. This property makes psyllium one of the most widely used dietary fibre supplements in the world.

Beyond supplementation, psyllium husk is increasingly used as a functional ingredient in food manufacturing. It appears in gluten-free baking (where it mimics some of the binding properties of gluten), breakfast cereals, bars, and various health-oriented food products. It is also the active ingredient in well-known fibre supplements.

India is by far the world’s largest producer and exporter of psyllium, particularly the state of Rajasthan. In Australia, psyllium is widely available in pharmacies, health food shops, and supermarkets, both as a standalone supplement and as an ingredient in food products.

How it's produced

Psyllium is grown as a commercial crop, primarily in the arid and semi-arid regions of north-western India. The plant is sown in cool, dry conditions (typically October–November) and harvested around March–April when the seed heads mature. The crop is cut, dried in the field, and then threshed to separate the seeds from the plant material.

The seeds are then processed in dehusking mills, where mechanical milling separates the outer husk from the inner seed. It is the husk — not the whole seed — that is the commercially valuable product. The husks are cleaned, graded by purity, and packaged for export. Some psyllium is further processed into powder form. While there is some small-scale psyllium cultivation in Australia and other countries, India dominates global production, accounting for the vast majority of the world’s supply.
